Normally Prescribed in Quantities of 30 Tablets,OxyCONTIN is a narcotic analgesic used to treat patients who have moderate to severe pain that requires continuous treatment and is expected to last for an extended period of time. OxyCONTIN is not for use as short-term pain treatment. Some medicines or medical conditions may interact with this medicine. INFORM YOUR DOCTOR OR PHARMACIST of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE if you are also taking aspirin; aminoglycoside antibiotics (such as gentamicin or tobramycin); clofibrate; heparin; sodium oxybate; a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI) such as furazolidone, linezolid, moclobemide, phenelzine, procarbazine, selegiline, isocarboxazid, or tranylcypromine; or if you have taken an MAOI within the last 14 days. ADDITIONAL MONITORING OF YOUR DOSE OR CONDTION may be needed if you are taking phenothiazines (such as promethazine), corticosteroids (such as prednisone), "blood thinners" (such as warfarin), "water pills" (such as furosemide, triamterene, or hydrochlorothiazide), ACE inhibitors (such as lisinopril or captopril), anticholinergics (such as scopolamine or hyoscyamine), lithium, methotrexate, tacrine, cimetidine, cyclosporine, certain seizure medicines (such as phenytoin or valproic acid), tacrolimus or sirolimus, mexiletine, naltrexone, rifampin, SSRI antidepressants (such as fluoxetine or citalopram), certain medicines for diabetes (such as glipizide, glyburide, or metformin), other narcotic pain medicines (such as pentazocine or butorphanol), or other medicines that may affect your breathing or cause drowsiness. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if you are unsure if any of your medicines may affect your breathing or cause drowsiness. DO NOT START OR STOP any medicine without doctor or pharmacist approval. Inform your doctor of any other medical conditions including lung or breathing problems (such as asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, cor pulmonale, or respiratory depression), dehydration, blood pressure problems, head injury, growths or increased pressure in the brain, stomach or bowel problems (such as inflammatory bowel disease, ulcer, or bleeding), tobacco or alcohol use, history of alcohol abuse or withdrawal, history of abuse of other substances, kidney problems, severe liver problems, low thyroid levels in your blood, adrenal problems (such as Addison's disease), seizures, prostate problems, urinary problems, pancreas problems, heart problems (such as heart failure), blood clotting problems or other blood problems (such as porphyria), mental or mood problems, lupus, allergies, pregnancy, or breast-feeding. This medicine should be used with caution in patients who are in shock or are unconscious. ROUTINE USE OF THIS MEDICINE IS NOT RECOMMENDED if you have severe asthma or are having an asthma attack, if you have certain bowel problems (paralytic ileus), certain stomach or bowel infections (pseudomembranous colitis), severe kidney problems, or severe breathing problems (severe respiratory depression). Contact your doctor or pharmacist if you have any questions or concerns about taking this medicine. Follow the directions for using this medicine provided by your doctor. This medicine comes with a medication guide. Read it carefully. Ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist any questions that you may have about this medicine. This medicine may be taken on an empty stomach or with food. TAKE THIS MEDICINE WITH A FULL GLASS of water (8oz/240ml). Do not lie down for 30 minutes after taking this medicine. STORE THIS MEDICINE at room temperature at 77 degrees F (25 degrees C) in a tightly closed container away from heat and light. Brief storage between 59 and 86 degrees F (15 and 30 degrees C) is permitted. IF YOU MISS A DOSE OF THIS MEDICINE and you are taking it routinely, take it as soon as possible. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and go back to your regular dosing schedule. DO NOT take 2 doses at once. DO NOT TAKE THIS MEDICINE IF YOU HAVE HAD A SEVERE ALLERGIC REACTION TO codeine, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine, or oxycodone (such as Tylox, Tylenol with Codeine, Vicodin) or any medicine containing aspirin or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine (such as Feldene, Motrin, Naprosyn, Daypro). A severe allergic reaction includes a severe rash, hives, breathing difficulties, or dizziness. If you have a question about whether you are allergic to this medicine or if a certain medicine contains codeine, hydrocodone, dihydrocodeine, oxycodone, aspirin, or a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medicine, contact your doctor or pharmacist. IF YOU EXPERIENCE difficulty breathing; tightness of chest; swelling of eyelids, face, or lips; or if you develop a rash or hives, tell your doctor immediately. Do not take any more of this medicine unless your doctor tells you to do so. If using this medicine for an extended period of time, DO NOT SUDDENLY STOP taking this medicine without your doctor's approval. When used for an extended period of time, this medicine may not work as well and may require different dosing. Talk with your doctor if this medicine stops working well. DO NOT EXCEED THE RECOMMENDED DOSE or take this medicine for longer than prescribed. Exceeding the recommended dose or taking this medicine for longer than prescribed may be habit-forming. Laboratory and/or medical tests, including liver and kidney function tests, may be performed in certain patients to monitor progress or to check for side effects. KEEP ALL DOCTOR AND LABORATORY APPOINTMENTS while you are taking this medicine. BEFORE YOU HAVE ANY MEDICAL OR DENTAL TREATMENTS, EMERGENCY CARE, OR SURGERY, tell the doctor or dentist that you are using this medicine. THIS MEDICINE MAY CAUSE DROWSINESS OR DIZZINESS. Alcohol, hot weather, exercise, and fever can increase these effects. To prevent them, sit up or stand slowly, especially in the morning. Also, sit or lie down at the first sign of dizziness, lightheadedness, or weakness. DO NOT DRIVE, OPERATE MACHINERY, OR DO ANYTHING ELSE THAT COULD BE DANGEROUS until you know how you react to this medicine. Using this medicine alone, with other medicines, or with alcohol may lessen your ability to drive or to perform other potentially dangerous tasks. DO NOT DRINK ALCOHOL while you are using this medicine. BEFORE YOU BEGIN TAKING ANY NEW MEDICINE, either prescription or over-the-counter, check with your doctor or pharmacist. This includes any medicines containing aspirin, ibuprofen, naproxen, or ketoprofen. CAUTION IS ADVISED WHEN USING THIS MEDICINE IN THE ELDERLY because they may be more sensitive to the effects of this medicine, especially breathing, stomach, and kidney side effects. FOR WOMEN: THIS MEDICINE SHOULD NOT BE USED in the third trimester of pregnancy because one of the ingredients in this medicine has been shown to cause harm to the human fetus when given during the third trimester. IF YOU PLAN ON BECOMING PREGNANT, discuss with your doctor the benefits and risks of using this medicine during pregnancy. THIS MEDICINE IS EXCRETED IN BREAST MILK. DO NOT BREAST-FEED while taking this medicine. SIDE EFFECTS that may occur while taking this medicine include dizziness, drowsiness, stomach upset, nausea, vomiting, gas, headache, constipation, diarrhea, or unusual sweating. If they continue or are bothersome, check with your doctor. CHECK WITH YOUR DOCTOR AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you experience unusual tiredness or weakness, blurred vision or other vision problems, or unexplained weight gain. CONTACT YOUR DOCTOR IMMEDIATELY if you experience severe dizziness or drowsiness; difficult or irregular breathing; shortness of breath; severe or persistent stomach pain; black, tarry, or bloody stools; vomiting blood; mental or mood changes; yellowing of the skin or eyes; dark urine; swelling of the hands or feet; fever; persistent or severe headache; unexplained stiff neck; confusion. An allergic reaction to this medicine is unlikely, but seek immediate medical attention if it occurs. Symptoms of an allergic reaction include rash, itching, swelling, severe dizziness, or trouble breathing. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist.
